As part of my Lenten journey and spiritual practices this year, like in previous years, I am sharing a photo and short reflection each day as outlined by Lent Photo a Day on Facebook. For this second day of Lent, the appointed word is Fear.

As a pianist (and now organist) often on Sundays, there is nothing that strikes more fear in my mind than music and books going in every direction. Well, nothing except maybe leaving my bulletin on the other side of the sanctuary when moving from one instrument to another. This past week on Sunday had a moment where a hymnal fell on the keys below for all to hear. And then last night I did in fact leave the bulletin on the piano when going back to the organ. Thankfully there was no problem. But as I think about fear, this picture (though staged) is a good encapsulation of one of my fears that I deal with as a church musician.

For whatever might bring you fear, I pray that you are able to rest easy in the loving arms of God in Christ on this second day and night of Lent.

Let us pray. Dear Jesus, as a hen covers her chicks with her wings to keep them safe, protect us this night under your golden wings; for your mercy’s sake. Amen.
