Clean

As I have done in previous Lents I am sharing a daily reflection as part of my Lenten discipline. This year I am using the “Wilderness Wanderings” theme compiled by the “Lent Photo a Day” group. The word appointed for February 25th was  “Clean.” Growing up at my home congregation we used to sing a version of “Create in Me a Clean Heart O God,” after … Continue reading Clean

Heart

As I have done in previous Lents I am sharing a daily reflection as part of my Lenten discipline. This year I am using the “Wilderness Wanderings” theme compiled by the “Lent Photo a Day” group. The word appointed for February 23rd, was  “Heart.” “Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart.” – 2 Corinthians … Continue reading Heart

The Fox, Hen, and Vulnerability- a sermon for Lent 2C

The following is the majority of the text that I preached from at Messiah Lutheran Church in Hazel Dell and North County this past weekend, based on the revised common lectionary passages appointed for the Second Sunday in Lent (Lent 2C). The primary text was the Gospel of Luke 13:31-35, with some references to Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18, and Psalm 27.  “Go and tell that fox for … Continue reading The Fox, Hen, and Vulnerability- a sermon for Lent 2C

Tell

As I have done in previous Lents I am sharing a daily reflection as part of my Lenten discipline. This year I am using the “Wilderness Wanderings” theme compiled by the “Lent Photo a Day” group. The word appointed for yesterday was “Tell.” This week I have started more intentionally “listening out” in my role as a mission developer at Messiah Lutheran Church. This has included … Continue reading Tell

Law

As I have done in previous Lents I am sharing a daily reflection as part of my Lenten discipline. This year I am using the “Wilderness Wanderings” theme compiled by the “Lent Photo a Day” group. The word appointed for today is “Law.” Within ministry, theology, and seminary there is this dialectic of law and gospel. Much has been, and will continue to be written about … Continue reading Law

Affirmation in Leadership

In my relatively young life I have been lucky enough to have many amazing mentors, leaders, supervisors, and collaborators. They have all been different, but one common trait that the best ones have had is that they are great at giving affirmation. This affirmation has looked different depending on the person, context, and experience. Some of the ways that I have seen and experienced it … Continue reading Affirmation in Leadership

The Problem with Bejeweled Butts

Those poor pews. Early on in a pastor friend of mine’s new call, she heard from a parishoner (a worshiper and congregational member) that the pews in the sanctuary were being unduly scratched and irreparably harmed. The person pointed to people wearing jeans and dress slacks with bejeweled butts as the problem. Apparently this was a major issue that was harming the church. The person … Continue reading The Problem with Bejeweled Butts
